Sealed World Beta 0.23.0... and 0.22.0 too.


Hey there! It's been a while since my last post. It hasn't been without good reason though, and I'm proud to have 0.23.0 released right now.

First of all, 0.22.0. I released 0.22.0 two weeks ago from the time of writing and it was pretty clear even before I wrote a blog post about it that it had some major problems. With little time left in the weekend to fix it I decided to just push everything to 0.23.0 instead.

This update contains a few really major things for Sealed World. So I'm going to cover a few in more detail before going into the usual list.

Pathfinding
This is the big one. This single system has eaten 90% of my game development time over the past month, and it's finally done. Monsters (currently only in the deep jungle, will be expanding to other zones soon) can jump, climb, do everything the player can do movement-wise. Seriously, they can complete the entire tutorial by themselves! This means that you can't cheese monsters by going out of reach anymore. This system would have actually been ready a few weeks ago but the old system ran like trash and did so in a way that wasn't fixable without a total redesign. But now it runs great, and works as you'd expect.

Revamped character creation
This is probably the single most asked-for thing to be added in the game's history, and I'm proud to announce that it's here in this update right now. The character creation window has been dramatically changed, and should be significantly easier to use and provide more options that you didn't have before. In addition to the window itself being new, I've poked around at the color palettes for character creation to make some of them a bit friendlier to use. Additionally, Raskaar have a new "hair"style, right now it only effects the face but this will be getting updated in a future update to work a bit better.

And now for the rest of the feature spam!

  • Added the ability to zoom the camera in and out, using the scroll wheel!
  • Added an option to increase the scale of the UI. you can find it in the options menu or use the console command "UI scale <any number between 1.0 and 4.0>". The default UI scale is 1.0. Hopefully this should fix some visibility issues people had with widescreen.
  • Fixed monster sprites not displaying properly
  • Added a sprite for Tailers courtesy of my good friend Yukon @YWainczak
  • Chisians are now a playable race (only Male though for now).
  • Fixed some monsters from not rendering correctly.
  • Fixed zoom issues caused by interiors.
  • Fixed the peek window ("You did it, I'm proud of you") from appearing when it shouldn't. I am still proud of you, however.
  • Added a new beacon to the Desert Crossroads map (and turned off the teleporter there too)
  • A bunch of other fixes I forgot about now.

Known bugs: World Chat is broken, don't use it. Chat text scales weirdly when using a non-default UI scale. You can select Female for Chisians, please don't do that (yet).

Oh right, there's one more thing.

This will be the only update in November. I'm taking the month off to focus on studying for the JLPT. Since I'm the only full-time(ish?) developer on the game that basically means that development work is halted until after December 3rd, 2017. So I'll see you guys all then!
